Predictors of Life Satisfaction in Older People
A previous study on older citizens in Western Croatia (Plavšić & Ambrosi-Randić, 2005) confirmed that the majority report a high level of life satisfaction regardless of their gender. However, numerous gender differences in other variables were found. This study investigated whether demographic, social, health-related, problem-related or activity-related variables predict life satisfaction among men and women differently. A quality of life questionnaire and life satisfaction scale were used on 452 people older than 60. Results indicate that problems, social relationships and activities are significant predictors of life satisfaction for men, whereas problems, social relationships, education, and material status are significant predictors for women. Conclusion: highly estimated life satisfaction in older people may be explainable, as least partly, with different variables reflecting different gender lifestyles.
