Elastic and pre-elastic fibers in granuloma pyogenicum and Kaposi’s sarcoma
The investigation was carried out on biopsy specimens of the skin from 19 patients aged 8-80 years, affected by vascular tumors, granuloma pyogenicum (11 patients) and Kapos’i sarcoma (8 patients). The patients with angiomatosis Kaposi (KS) werw not clinically suspect of AIDS. Histological sections of the biopsy specimens were stained with Sirius red F3BA and examined by light and polarization microscope for the presence of collagen fibers. In order to demonstrate elastic and oxytalan (pre-elastic) fibers standard elastica staining as well as the methods for demonstration of pre-elastic (oxytalan) fibers were applied. All finding were in essential details the same in both tumors. The stroma contained a fibrillar component which could be defined as collagen type III (reticulin). Elastic fibers were only exceptionally found. Oxytalan (pre-elastic) fibers were present, but their relative paucity and distribution did not speak in favor of neoelastogenesis. It is in agreement with the view of the endothelial nature of these vascular tumors. The sharp contrast between the elastica-poor tumor mass and its elastica-rich immediate surrounding could be used for the demarcation of these vascular tumors in histological sections.
