Airports` Revenue and Cost Structures

Deregulation, liberalisation and privatisation of airlines, as well as increasing competition are some of the most significant changes that affect the aviation market. In order to compete successfully in a highly competitive market, airport authorities have to be focused on the rapid changes and challenges facing the air transport industry. Airport authorities need to have a clear understanding of both revenue and cost structures in order to respond to market challenges and meet the future needs and requirements of all airport`s customers. The aim of this paper is to place emphasis on the airports` revenue and cost structures. It also seeks to determine some of the factors influencing structure of revenues and costs. The case study of Dubrovnik airport demonstrated a significant dependence on revenue from aeronautical related activities. In examining the structure of commercial revenues within the airport, retail revenues compose the largest commercial source. Labour costs account for almost half the total costs reflecting the airport operator`s active involvement in providing ground handling services. In the case of Dubrovnik Airport there is a clear connection between the airport size and the revenue generation.
