Phenotype modification in zones of appositional growth of human elastic cartilage
Blocks of elastic cartilage of the epiglottis from persons aged 30 to 88 years were examined histologically for the phenotypic traits of the appositionally growth cartilage. In all examined specimens there were subperichondrial areas or zones of cartilage which differed from the original elastic cartilage plate by the paucity or complete absence of elastic fibers in the intercellular matrix (an intermediate form between the hyaline and the true elastic cartilage). This phenotypic change was interpreted in terms of the differential stability of particular biosynthetic capacities in the initial embryonic population of chondroblasts.
