Measuring neonatal pain during procedures in the intensive care unit
Objective: to asses pain intensity during three invasive procedures in the neonatal intensive care unit ; to compare term and preterm neonates in behaioral response to pain. Methods: NIPS score of 20 term and 20 preterm neonates in the Intensive Care Unit was recorded during aspiration of upper respiratory tract, venipuncture and insertion of orogastic sonde. Results: The highest mean NIps value in term neonates group was for venipuncture, while in preterm neonates group it was for aspiration of upper respiratory tract. Signitficant difference (p<0.01) was found between term and preterm neonates group for mean intensity during venipuncture. Conclusion: Term and preterm neonates differ in their responses to painful procedures during their stay in Intensive Care Unit. NIPS is suitable instrument for neonatal pain evaluation.
