Welfare State and the Mobilization of Class Cleavages
his paper analyzes the link between electoral divisions and socioeconomic context examaning the role welfare state policies and deindustrialization played in the mobilization of political divisions in societies of Western Europe. Specifically the paper focuses on the impact of socioeconomic context on the pattters of structural (class) voting at two points. Firstly it examines the impact of policies used in the development of welfare state on the mobilization of political divisions in advanced industrial societies in the 1970s. Secondly it focuses on the impact differences in the process of deindustrialization had on the development of political divisions in post-industrial societies and voting behavior of segments of working and middle classes. The focus on the mobilization of political divisions which took place during the process of the formation of a welfare state, or at the end of this process, enables us to get a fuller picture of the role of the welfare state in electoral politics of western European countries.
