Forest communities of the Dilj mountain (Croatia) and their environmental gradients.
The work deals with the forest vegetation of Dilj (NE Croatia) situated on the southern edge of the Pannonian basin. In total, 10 plant communities of Querco-Fagetea were noted, based on 279 relevés. The ecology of these communities was analyzed in detail. The study provides the data on the vegetation and environmental factors, the significance of factors for the plant species composition, at the same time most important environmental gradients and differences between plant communities are presented. On all plots the vegetation was recorded and surface soil layer was analyzed. Other ecological conditions were also considered (microclimatic, geomorphology, Ellenberg indicator values, etc.) to test possible correlations as well. Vegetation was classified by means of multivariate cluster analysis, while vegetation-site relationships were examined by direct gradient analysis. Communities under consideration are found on as rather restricted space where the various ecological factors make a mosaic of various communities often with unclear boundaries. Soil reaction and exposition was identified as most significant environmental factors explaining the variation of the studied vegetation. Despite that the communities under consideration are well differentiated according to Ellenberg indicator values, the result show a need for their further revision on the territory of Croatia.
