Perishable goods transportation in North Adriatic ports - new logistic solutions
The transportation of highly perishable goods is recording considerable annual growth of 8 % in recent years with the trends of further growth. Because of the proximity to the Northern Adriatic ports, the Mediterranean countries represent the most interesting market as they export large quantities of fruits and vegetables to EU. The Northern Adriatic ports are thus facing a new challenge – how to increase the throughput of highly perishable goods? One of the solutions is the organization of new distribution system with the setup of so called “cold platform” in the port’s hinterland. The highly perishable goods demand quick, safe and efficient transportation as their quality is conditioned by their freshness. The ports hence represent a place of unloading, warehousing and distribution of these goods. The paper present the new logistic model for distribution of highly perishable goods and the role of Northern Adriatic ports within it.
