Pomological analysis of Lovranska and Creska, Croatian autochthonous sweet cherry varieties

Lovranska and Creska are autochthonous varieties of sweet cherry traditionally produced in the region of Lovran and at the island of Cres, in the county of Primorsko-goranska, Croatia. These varieties are known by high quality fruits, good aroma and size. Both varieties are preferred by farmers due to high price and high income that may be accomplished in their production. They are also preferred by consumers and, due to their uniqueness and autochthony, their marketing has a potential as a part of touristic offer in the beginning of touristic season. However, there are no scientific data on these varieties, and there were no evaluations of their quality and performance in comparison to other well known varieties. Recently, their evaluation was done during two subsequent years by comparison of Lovranska sweet cherry in an experimental orchard with varieties Hedelfingen, Lambert, Lapins and Katalin. This orchard was grown according to randomized complete block design on Colt rootstock. Creska sweet cherry was evaluated in commercial orchard, where the plants were growing in completely randomized design, and compared with Bing, Stella and Sue. The rootstock used in that orchard was P. mahaaleb. Given results show that both varieties have good potential for production, and are at least as good as standard cultivars.
