European Language Policy Between Theory and Practice
Europe is a small continent but with large diversity of languages and cultures. Therefore, the main European political organizations, e.g. Council of Europe and European Union, lay great stress upon the protection of multilingual and multicultural European identity. The aim of this article is to identify and to present the most important documents and decisions envisaged for the implementation of such a highly demanding objective that affects political, educational and cultural practices. However, the proclaimed language policy and desire for the preservation of linguistic diversity very often collide with the natural role of language of facilitating human communication. Such discrepancies will be given a particular emphasis as they particularly concern smaller nations and languages, Croatia and the Croatian language included.
