Discriminant Function Model as a Tool for Classification of Stratigrafically Undefined Radiolarian Cherts in the Ophiolite Zones
Two discriminant function models are constructed in order to distinguish major- and trace-element geochemical patterns characteristic for the radiolarian cherts from the ophiolite mélange of the Zagorje-Mid-Transdanubian Zone in the NW Croatia. The models are consequently used to assign new samples from adjacent magmatic-sedimentary complex that represents the continuation of Central Dinaridic Ophiolite Belt from the NW Bosnia and thus to test their applicability in similar cases when clear field relations are absent. In both models the first discriminant function explains the most part of the system variability. However, between the two the trace-element model proves itself as a more helpful predictive tool representing the straightforward example of absolutely correct classification of samples into three pre-defined groups (Triassic-basin, Triassic-slope and Jurassic radiolarian cherts). This quality is extended to new assignments, focusing all samples from the test region to a single group (Jurassic) according to their trace-element geochemistry.
