Education for Digital Libraries: Challenges, Developments and Cooperation

Croatia entered the 2000s with plans to restructure higher education systems based on Bologna recommendations. The Humboldt tradition at the universities in the SEE region, necessity to introduce new academic profiles as well as the use of ICT in higher education, is leading the way towards the restructuring of existing programs or designing new curricula and to cooperation between the Library and Information Science (LIS) and Information Science (IS) departments. The paper will discuss the issue of the reform application in LIS, Archival, Museum and IS schools, between a traditional approach and an innovative one, based on European trends in harmonization of courses and recognition of qualifications. It will also discuss conflicting paradigms on book/information in the wider area of Information Sciences education, especially Digital Library education. The author is especially concerned with the idea of restructuring curricula to accommodate content of the Digital Libraries which is one of the ‘hot’ topics in Europe. EU is interested in digitization and preservation of its cultural heritage and seeks for competent professionals to deal with many and diverse issues of Digital Libraries. In this respect three questions will be asked in relation to the trends and possible directions of developments related to the educational levels and programs: What are the basic concerns in developing new curricula for those who are working in digital information sector? How do the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary issues influence curricula design in wider IS? What are the future steps, particularly in regard to European and/or SEE cooperation?
