The impact of the course «The art of teaching medicine»: Evaluation of the Croatian model of training in medical education

Abstract: Introduction: Since 1990, the Department for Educational Technology at Medical School Zagreb, has been responsible for the development and implementation of a programme to improve the quality of medical education. A principle acctivity is to run a series of workshops, lasting three days, aimed for experienced medical teachers, to encourage the use of inovative concepts and principles in medical education. As a results of this, the Croatian Association for Medical Education (CAME) was established, bringing together medical teachers from four medical schools in Croatia. One of the main acctivities of CAME is to run the one week course for young, unexperienced teachers, entitled «The Art of Medical Education». Aims: the course aims are to: encourage and enable medical teachers early in their catreer to learn and to put in the practice conteporary approaches in teaching and learning in medicine ; undestand the contextual factors influencing this process ; share experience with others. Methods and participants: Since 2000, the course was attended by 169, mainly participants from Zagreb Medical School. On the last day, participants are asked to evaluate the course, using qualitative and quantitative methods (writen guestionnaire and group discussion). Results: The course has fulfilled the expectations of all participants (mena grade 4.0 ± 1.2) ranking fro 1-the lowes, to 5 – the maximum. All participants confirm that it has been useful and beneficial for everyday teaching (mena grade 42 ± 0.9). Those elements scoring most highly were: build on and expands their previous teaching experience ; motivating the further interst in teaching ; stimulation of exchange of experience with colleagues from different departments ; peer discussion as a continuos support ; satisfaction in communication and sharing doubts with experienced teachers ; panel discussion with invited guests. The aspects of course evaluated less highly and where improvements could be made were: insuficient participation of «the old teachers and decision makers» within the faculty ; doubts as to wether implementation of the skills mastered at the course will be transfered to practice. Conclusion: putting together a mixed group of participants (different pre-knowledge, fields of work, interst and expectations and teaching environment) has a positive influence on their motivation and encouragements.
