Analysis of durability and life cycle costing of different repair methods applied on 11 city overpasses

Concrete structures are designed and built to fulfil certain essential requirements over a period of time that is termed the service life. Appropriate maintenance regime should ensure that structure will not experience significant deterioration during its lifespan. Thus, when the structure experiences damage or deterioration due to mechanical or environmental actions, it is expected that it will be repaired in order to continue to meet the specified design requirements. In this paper analysis of case studies are presented, which included condition assessment of eleven overpasses (length of the biggest being 552.0 m), on huge junction, that constitute core of the Zagreb bypass. All of these overpasses, that have been in traffic since 1979, are of a very big importance for the capital of Croatia because they serve both for redirecting the city traffic to the suburban areas and the entrance-exit from the city. Based on the report of the condition surveys and assessment of the present state of the structures, alternatives of the repair strategies were proposed and analysed. Life-cycle costing of the three intervention methods was performed based on the durability of each intervention, with the aim of awaking the owner’s awareness about the pro-active and re-active approaches towards maintenance and management of the structures.
