The Discovery of the Hematoblast by Carl Heitzmann in 1872
Carl Heitzmann (1836-1896) was born on October 2nd, 1836. in Vinkovci, a small town in the eastern part of todays Croatia. Two particular facts endear him to our memory, one of which is elaborated in detail in this paper. (i) Carl Heitzmann emigrated to New York in 1874 where he became one of the founding members of the worlds oldest national dermatological society, the American Dermatological Association (ADA), in 1876. (ii) In his capacity as a pathologist Heitzmann first described the hematoblast in 1872, a discovery widely forgotten and nowadays credited to Georges Hayem, of France. The paper presents this latter fact in detail, for the first time.
