Back to nature as a powerful tool in observing diseases
Two exemplary types of sources will be elaborated in my talk. One is a small corpus of earliest recipe collection preserved on the territory of Croatia and the other is a collection of watercolours preserved at the Institute for the History of Medicine in Vienna. Both sources will be used with the aim to emphasise how observing nature, time and again can be a powerful tool to find out clues and values which are sometimes just lying neglected during long centuries and ignored by our inability to go back both to past periods as well as to nature. Forgetting the history of disease is not an uncommon mistake of modern medicine, but, diseases do not care anyway. They re-appear or appear in different forms challenging again and again our knowledge or perception. We should always step one step back to achieve the holistic look at natural phenomena i.e. diseases in approaching them. In that respect Back to nature is always a good starting point.
History of dermatology; Glagolitic recipes; skin diseases; sarcoma Kaposi; teaching tools; watercolours; Croatia; Austria
