Fatigue crack propagation in stiffened panels under tension loading
Fatigue crack growth in stiffened panels under cyclic tension loading was studied in this paper. Results of fatigue crack propagation tests with cyclic stress of constant amplitude and frequency on centrally notched plate and stiffened panel specimens were reported. A numerical crack growth simulation procedure based on integration of Paris equation was introduced and fatigue lifetime was simulated for the specimens. Implementing the introduced procedure crack propagation in a main deck longitudinal of a double-hull oil tanker was analyzed. The Mode I, II and III Stress Intensity Factors (SIFs) were determined in a FEA using singular elements. Compared to Mode I SIF values, the Mode II and III values were small and did not influence structural components fatigue lifetime significantly. Secondary bending which occurs due to the cut stiffeners or flanges has been taken into account in the stress intensity factor determination. The study showed a significant influence of secondary bending on crack growth rate in stiffened panels. Also, it was shown that an increase in nominal loading stress range of 10% or decrease of 5%, can shorten or extend fatigue lifetime of the structural component by 30% or 20%, respectively.
