Occurrence of antimicrobials in Croatian wastewaters and their behaviour during wastewater treatment

Wastewaters represent one of the main sources of environmental anthropogenic organic and inorganic contaminants. Municipal waters in Croatia are mainly of the mixed type and include both, domestic and industrial wastewaters. Despite significant improvements in wastewater management in the last few years, a vast majority of Croatian municipalities release their wastewaters into the receiving ambient waters either without any treatment or after being treated only mechanically (Kastelan Macan et al. 2007). As a consequence, organic load of receiving waters is often very high and characterised by a rather complex contaminant composition. Besides various types of law-regulated contaminant classes, wastewaters contain a large number of various specific organic constituents for which environmental quality criteria are yet to be determined. Recently, there has been a growing concern that such anthropogenic compounds, frequently referred to as novel or emerging organic contaminants, may cause undesirable effects in the environment. The identification and determination of many previously undetected organic anthropogenic compounds in wastewaters, including a large number of pharmaceuticals, has seen a remarkable progress in recent years, mainly owing to a rapid development of LC/MS-based analytical techniques (Barcelo and Petrovic 2005). However, the knowledge on the occurrence and fate of individual organic contaminants in transition countries like Croatia is still rather limited. This paper provides a comprehensive report on the occurrence of antimicrobials with a special emphasis on their behaviour in the wastewater treatment.
