Karst Features of the Baške Oštarije
Karst depression Baške Oštarije is situated on the ridge of Velebit mountain. It is morphological border between middle and south Velebit area. The depression extends from W to E in length of 4, 5 kilometers on altitude range of 900 to approximately 980 meters above the sea level. Abundance of various karts forms are scattered in Baške Oštarije and surrounding area. The depression is karst polje (contact type) with two sinking streams. Next to it few characteristic uvalas (Crni Dabar, Ravni dabar, Konjsko, Sladovača) and blind valley of Crno vrelo stream are formed. Areas built of Tertiary breccia (Jelar sediments) are north of the polje and they are characterized by specific karsts towers landscape so called kukovi (kuk sing.) with numerous microforms. Ponor Crnog vrela is one of the most important caves in Baške Oštarije area.
