New Museum of Contemporary art: Challenges and design
First conceptual projects for the museum of contemporary art are dated almost 40 years ago. In this article brief history of museum is presented. Few years ago, structure of museum is finally built. Museum of contemporary art is one of the biggest concrete structures build in Zagreb in recent years. Area of each floor is around 1800 m2. Structural system of the museum is complex space frame. It is one of the biggest prestressed structures in Zagreb. More importantly, this structure is prestressed on site, after all structural elements were built. Due to possibility of concrete creep, external anchors are also made (designers have left an possibility to use external cables for prestressing). One of the main characteristics of this structure are cantilever beams with large span. This article will deal with structural design of museum, mostly with problems of prestressed beams that are already incorporated in structure and their influence on a whole structure and other structural elements. It is concluded that for this kind of structure only reasonable and feasible solution is usage of prestressed concrete.
