Pattern of genotype by environment interaction for grain yield in OS maize hybrids at megaenvironments of Croatia and Turkey

Size and pattern of genotype × environment interaction (GEI) have important implications for maize breeding, especially when hybrids should be placed into markets in distinct growing regions. Recently, OS hybrids are grown in Southeast Europe as well as in Turkey which represents two large and divergent regions of adaptation (megaenvironments). Thus, specific interactions between a hybrid and locations within the two megaenvironments should be examined. Pattern analysis as one variant of cluster analysis can be used by simplifying the data set by grouping individuals with similar response for certain attributes. The objective of the study was to examine the pattern of GEI for grain yield in seven OS maize hybrids grown at six locations in Croatia and Turkey. Pattern analysis revealed two distinct groups of hybrids with different responses at two megaenvironments. There is a group HIGH with four hybrids (OS515, OSSK602, OS713, OSSK644) having consistently high mean grain yields across the all environments. Performance plots of the individual genotype groups indicate various patterns of adaptation to the megaenvironments. The group MID (three hybrids) had inconsistent yield response across the groups of locations, whereas four hybrids of the HIGH group were high yielding in almost all locations. Thus, pattern analysis of genotype × environment interaction for grain yield in maize trials revealed distinct groups of genotypes as well as locations.
