Religious influences on organ transplantation

Transplantation medicine opens medical, moral, theological, legal, social and philosophical questions. The great progress in modern medicine such as development of immunology, surgery, pharmacology and transfusiology helps to develop and improve transplantation medicine. Organ and tissue transplantation has become a common lifesaving and life-enhancing procedure with excellent results. The technical aspects of organ transplantation are the same everywhere, but the actual practice of transplantation varies depending of the society and culture. Organ donation is a social necessity for this therapy because transplantation is not possible without public collaboration. The lack of organ donation continues to be a major limiting factor in transplantation. The aim of our study was to examine the level of believer’s information about organ transplantation and about attitude of their religious community about this problem. In addition, we wanted to establish their personal attitude towards organ donation, such as the activity of certain religious communities in promotion of transplantation medicine. Result of our study showed that there is a need for better public information about organ donation and transplantation from the Ministry of Health, low authorities, and religious community in promoting transplantation medicine. Most religious communities does not deal with organ transplantation through their work. More then a half of examinees support some form of material compensation in organ transplantation. The family is one of the most important factors in deciding about organ transplantation for Catholics NS Orthodox Christians ; for the Muslims it is religious community ; for the Protestant and the atheists it is media.
