Improving the ultimate strength of ship hull

The paper first briefly recapitulates the practical methods for ultimate strength analysis of ship hull girder according to common rules of classification societies. Then it shortly presents the home-made computer programme based on IACS recommendations. Subsequently, benchmark studies of ultimate strength of a bulk carrier built in Croatian shipyard employing program ULTIS and program MARS2000 are attached. The examples illustrate the stepwise yielding and buckling scenario of hull elements both for deck and bottom structures in sagging and hogging conditions. Finally, the paper investigates the possible improvement of ship’s hull girder ultimate strength by strengthening of longitudinal structural elements following their failure sequences under bending.
