Critical Rainfall Infiltration Issues in Landslides
Reliable modeling of unsaturated seepage and rainfall infiltration into slopes is an essential prerequisite for discovering the triggering mechanism of any landslide. However, our ability to determine the relevant flow parameters and describe the infiltration process is still limited and much of the fundamental research still needs to be done. The paper describes some recent efforts and the results in measuring the unsaturated flow characteristics for several soils and highlights the critical issues that must be resolved before a viable engineering procedure for modeling unsaturated flow could be put into practice. Differences in wetting and drying characteristics are highlighted and the attention is drawn to the variations in the flow phenomena over suction and saturation ranges.
