Oestrogen receptors in human dental pulp: a preliminary report
Oestrogen stimulates endothelial cells to produce prostacyclin (PGI 2) and nitric oxide (NO). These effects are evidently mediated through oestrogen receptors. The production of NO is influenced by cyclical hormonal changes in women. The objective was to localize the presence of the oestrogen receptors in human dental pulp and to determine the difference in their expression between male and female pulp, and between healthy and inflamed pulp. The pulps were collected from teeth planned for endodontic treatment because of pulpitis or prosthetic reasons. The other group were teeth extracted for orthodontic reasons. The donors were aged 14.5 46 years. The age, the date of extirpation or extraction, and for women the first day of the last menstrual cycle were recorded. The oestrogen receptors were observed on parallel frozen sections by mouse monoclonal antibody. Also, parallel sections were stained by haematoxilyn and eosin. Thirty out of 57 pulps were examined by light microscopy ; seven were oestrogen positive. Only one healthy pulp showed oestrogen activity. In health pulp oestrogen receptors were observed in the odontoblast layer, endothelial cells and nerves. Oestrogen receptors were more reactive in inflamed pulps, whether male or female. With such a small sample the effect of age on the presence of oestrogen receptors could not be determined.
