Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle) - Invasive Alien Species in Croatia
Tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle, family Simaroubaceae, order Sapindales) is a deciduous tree native to China. It was introduced in Europe in the late 1700s as an ornamental species. Ailanthus altissima is one of species listed on EPPO List of invasive alien plants. It’s present in whole Croatia but very aggressive in coastal part. The island of Cres is one of Croatian islands on witch Ailanthus altissima has a big influence on biodiversity. It kills native vegetation and often forms dense monocultures. Ailanthus altissima reproduces both from seed and by sprouting vegetatively from stumps and roots. In poster, results of different mechanical, chemical and combination of these two methods of control of Ailanthus altissima are presented. Investigations were conducted in 2008 and 2009 in vicinity of Eco-center Caput Insulae-Beli, on north part of the island of Cres. Investigations were conducted in different time of year (spring, summer and autumn) and results of different treatments were compared.
