Women, Marriage, and Family in Istrian Communes in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries

The paper will analyse the position of the woman in the Istrian marriage pattern. This was most widespread way of disposition of the property in marriage in Istria, but there were also Venetian and Slavic pattern of marriage. Furthermore, the paper will analyse legal competence in work of married women and widows which was greatly influenced by Istrian marriage pattern, as well as the position of the woman as a tutor of the children and the woman`s disposition of the property in testaments. The analysis will be based on the unpublished sources of the head of Novigrad commune (1492-1600) stored in the State Archives in Pazin, published Istrian statutes and the book of the Buzet notary-public Martin Sotolić (1492-1517). (All these towns are situated in Istria, today’s Croatia). In the analysed period, Istria was divided into Venetian and Austrian part, and the analysis only of the area under the Republic of Venice will be done.
