Sažetak
Solidago virgaurea L. and Solidago gigantea Ait. (Asteraceae) are growing wild in Croatia. These species have been used in folk medicine for the treatment of chronic nephritis, cystitis, urolithiasis, rheumatism, ulceration and as an antiphlogistic drug. Solidago species contain triterpenoid saponins, flavonoid glycosides, tannins, polysaccharides and essential oil (1). In our study we have tested the antimicrobial activity of essential oils, which were prepared from air dried, aerial parts of S. virgaurea and S. gigantea collected at the flowering stage in August and early September. Antimicrobial activity was tested with diffusion method. Several volumes of essential oils are dropped with microsyringe on the surface of inoculated Mueller-Hinton agar (bacterial strains) and Sabouraud agar (yeast and dermatophytes). After diffusion period on 4C for 1 hour, plates are incubated 18h on 371C for bacterial strains, 48h for yeasts and 4-7 days for dermatophytes on 252C for determination of minimal microbicidal concentration (MMcC) and minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). MMcC was the lowest concentration of essential oils that completely inhibit growth of microorganisms on the surface and in the deep of the agar, MIC was the lowest concentration, which decreased growth of microorganisms. Among Gram-positive bacterial strains, essential oil of Solidago virgaurea has lowest MICs on Streptococcus pyogenes ATCC 20471 and Sarcina flava at 0,022%(v/v) and Bacillus cereus ATCC 11778 at 0,044%(v/v). MICs with aerosol have been noticed on Streptococcus faecalis ATCC 20211 at 0,22%(v/v) and on Bacillus pumilus NCTC 8241 at 0,22%(v/v). Solidago gigantea oil has lowest MICs on Bacillus cereus ATCC 11778 at 0,003%(v/v) and on Streptococcus pyogenes ATCC 20471 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC at 0,022%(v/v). On tested Gram-negative bacterial strains, Solidago virgaurea oil exhibited MIC of 0,066%(v/v) on Proteus mirabilis and 0,22%(v/v) on Klebsiella pneumoniae and at 0,22%(v/v) bactericidal influence of aerosol on Escherichia coli O128:B12 and Salmonella enteritidis. Solidago gigantea oil has MIC of 0,022%(v/v) on E. coli O128:B12, 0,22%(v/v) on Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella enteritidis and Proteus mirabilis. Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 is resistant on both tested essential oils. Both oils exhibited strong fungicidal effect on dermatophyte strains with MIC 0,011%(v/v) on Trichophyton rubrum and 0,022%(v/v) on Microsporum gypseum, M. canis, T. mentagrophytes.
