From Multiculturalism toward Interculturalism
It is hard to say that there are societies in the world that are not multicultural (in terms of demographic and cultural diversity). However, it is also be hard to say that there are multicultural societies in the world in which prevails full equality in the exchange and interaction among different cultures, that is to say intercultural communication. On the other hand, the future of a just and humane world is projected in such a society or societies in which diversities will be respected and in which productive and creative cooperation between the Others and the Different will be at work. Education has a major role in implementation of interculturalism. Although each teaching subject can comprise the intercultural approach, the subjects involving language and literature education are especially suitable for preparing and teaching young people to observe, accept and respect the differences between people belonging to different cultures. Along these lines, methodological/didactic approaches are presented that lead to establishment of intercultural dialogue.
