Minimising Power Dissipation in Gear Boxes
Some possibilities in minimising frictional power dissipation in the gearboxes are elaborated. The frictional power dissipation produced by one pair of gears significantly depends on loading conditions, chosen gear size, basic profile, profile parameters and number of gear teeth. A gearbox whose construction is based on inadequate choice of these parameters can have several times greater power dissipation than necessary. In the intention to minimise power dissipation the theoretical background of the tribological aspects is discussed and general expressions that can be applied to any kind of toothing are developed. As the result of detailed analyses, optimal parameters for design of some gearboxes are recommended.
