Heredity, Environment and Equality
The possible existence of genetic psychological differences among individuals, and even more among human groups, is often regarded as a threat to the political ideal of human equality. Is this fear justified? Can biological facts, whatever they turn out to be, have any relevance for the normative sphere of social or political goals? It will be argued here that the negative answer to this question is wrong. Genetics and politics are not hermetically insulated from each other. The relation between biological “is” and ideological “ought” will be explored from both directions: (a) how some Darwinian truths may affect current values, and (b) how some strongly held values can shape or socially construct scientific “reality”.
