Biofuels Improving Sustainability of Transport in Croatian Tourist Resorts
Tourism is an important and large industry which encapsulates a multitude of energy intensive services, a large variety and number of special vehicles, generally located in sensitive ecological areas. Biodiesel in tourism sector of Croatia has high potential as a new and renewable energy source and can be used as substitution fuel in the vehicles which are used in sensitive ecological areas. One of possible raw materials for production of biodiesel in Croatia is used cooking oil. Research has shown that the average person in Croatia produces about 2 litres of used cooking oil per annum and total consumption of oil in Croatia is around 40.000 tons. At the moment Croatia collect over 1.8 million litres of used cooking oil mainly from tourism related activities (restaurants, hotels, etc.) and these quantities of collected oil have tendency of growth. This paper analyse Croatian potential of used cooking oil in tourism related activities and potential of biodiesel production from used cooking oil.
