Performance based design of r/c infilled frames

Masonry is commonly used in frame building structures as infill to either protect the inside of the structure from the environment or to divide inside spaces. During the design and analysis of steel/reinforced concrete frame structures, infill has commonly been ignored. Contrary to common practice, masonry infills do influence the overall behavior of structures when subjected to lateral forces. The influence of infills on overall behavior of the structure has been found to change with the direction in which the load is applied. It is believed that the development of rational design procedures is a critical issue not only to reduce the loss of life and property damage, but also to obtain a safe end economical solution. There is a need for development of simplified procedures which would provide rough estimates of seismic response of infilled structures and which would allow quick analysis of a number of variants. It should give the engineer a performance-based method alternative, which should also result in safe and required economical construction. The proposed project will lead to practical procedures, based on extensive library of experimental data and numerical methods for design of infilled frame buildings that provide desired structural performance during earthquake. Present design methods, though complicated for everyday praxis, do not provide desired performance during and earthquake. The proposed research will establish the domain where simple design methods are applicable and produce out sastisfactory results for desired performance levels. At the second stage more refined analytical methods would be proposed. The derived procedures will be simple, usable by the profession and all sources of randomness and uncertainty (earthquake loading, material and element behavior, etc.) will be incorporated in them. Their application should result in performance that is predictable and will produce consistent seismic protection for old and new structures.      The proposed research will be focused on the analysis of infilled frames in buildings as well as in the warehouses and industrial buildings. The minimum requests that ensure stability and favorable behavior of the frame-infill wall structures would be defined, regarding the expected performance, considering each-country specific construction practice. It would be used to upgrade and redefine the relevant parts of European and Indian codes and Standards.
