ACTUAL PROBLEMS ON MAN-MACHINE RELATIONSHIP ON BOARD MODERN VESSEL

Economic aspects of modern vessel exploitation are dependent on the technology applied. In this sense the traditional knowledge and skills of conducting the vessel tend to be replaced by electronic and computerized systems. Within such systems the crewmembers at the management level lose the prerequisites of active participation in the conducting of navigation increasingly adopting the characteristics of operators and controllers of integrated navigation systems. It is due to these tendencies, which are primarily economically motivated, that misunderstandings in man – machine relationship occur. The replacement of active human knowledge by electronic systems and programmes in real conditions of navigation shows significant deficiencies from the aspect of safety. This is one of the basic causes of the occurrence of human error ranging between 75% do 96% depending on the type of accident. This is especially the case if the fact is taken into consideration that modern navigation devices on board vessels are not standardized from the aspect of use and as such they often induce the operator to commit error due to their design and characteristics. The accompanying system errors occurring in navigation as well as the influence of work environment to the occurrence of human error are investigated in this paper.
