Stearate-Modified Calcium Carbonate Fillers and their Effect on the Properties of Poly(vinyl acetate) Composites
Calcium carbonate filler particles obtained by the carbonation of calcium hydroxide were treated with sodium stearate to give different levels of surface modification. The surface characteristics of the fillers were investigated by nitrogen adsorption (B.E.T.), contact angle measurements and inverse gas cromatography (IGC). The fillers were then incorporated into a plasticised oly(vinyl acetate) matrix and the tensile properties of the composite were determined and related to the surface characteristics of the filler added.
