Arbaciella elegans MORTENSEN, 1910 (Arbacüdae, Echinoidea) a new species of the Adriatic Sea fauna
Arbaciella elegans Mortensen, 1910 is a rare Echinoid previouslyfound in the Mediterranean waters and in the Atlantic along the western coast of Africa. The paper presents the first record of A. elegans in the Adriatic Sea. During the monitoring of effects of urban-indus-trial waste on the coastal sea qualitynearlarge Croatian towns along the eastern Adriatic coast (from Zadar to Dubrovnik) the benthic flora and fauna were collected by SCUBA dfvingfrom 1/25 sqm surfaces along the transects, descending from the surface down to a depth of 3 m. Benthic species were worked out by standard methods for the determi-nation ofbenthfc algae, marine phanerogams and benthicinvertebrates, as well as biocoenoses. Only one specimen of the species A. elegans was found at a depth of 2 m in the Biocoenosis of photophilic algae on the eastern coastal part of the central Adriatic (the town of Split, Croatia). It was black a color, and had a test of 2.5 mm in diameter and approxi-mately 1 mm in height. This is the first record of the species A. elegans in the Adri-atic Sea and therefore it should be included in the register of the Echinoid fauna of the Adriatic Sea.
