A Research into Attention Problems in the Classroom and Some Suggestions

Problems about paying attention and keeping focused on academic tasks are among the most common reasons why students are not able to make the most of their potential. In order to be successful in class, students need to stay focused and pay attention. Students who fail to concentrate long enough on tasks face a number of problems. They may be labeled as lazy, unmotivated, hyperactive, et.c and they confront countles challenges. In other words, lack of attention may lead to varying problems in and outside the classroom. It is worth noting that most students may keep their attention long enough for other areas, such as video games or sports. From the teachers' point of views the situation is not less challenging than theri students'. It is critical for teachers to provide a peaceful atmosphere for all students present and identify potential problems and deal with them. This paper is based on a research carried out in language classrooms where the target languages are not the mother tongue of students. The research is being carried out i two institutions: Sabanci University, School of Languages and University of Zagreb, Croaticum. The research includes data from questionnaires tht are given to students. It mainly seeks to investigate the following issues: problems related to attention span, making use of the data obtained in another discipline psychology), identifying students who have problems with attention through questionnaires, offer som practica suggestions to be followed in language classrooms. It is hoped that the outcome of the research will be of interest to not only language teachers but for those who consider altrnative ways to maximize their pupils' potential as well.
