Fluorescence spectroscopy as detection tool of oil pollution in coastal marine waters
Monitoring and detection of oil pollution and its organic compounds in particular polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are of essential significance because of their carcinogenic activity and frequent occurrence in marine environment. Consequently it is an important to develop a simple and reliable method in order to determine these compounds. Fluorescence spectroscopy was proved to be a sensitive and reliable tool for detection of environmental pollutants. Advantage of fluorescence technique is its sensitivity and ability for rapid measurements for verification of presence of oil and its water soluble components. We discuss real possibilities and problems concerning quantitative analysis of data obtained by this method.
