The application of different equations for meat yield estimation in swine carcasses
This research was carried out on 120 pigs of different genotypes: (LWxGL)xGL, (LWxSL)xGL, (SLxLW)xLW and pigs of unknown genotype, which is not a rare case in Croatian slaughterhouses. According to that pigs were divided in four equal groups. All pigs were slaughtered in different slaughterhouses in east Slavonia. Lean meat percentage in swine carcasses was determined objectively by dissection and by five different equations for prediction. Those predictions were compared regarding to objectively determined lean meat yield, cross fat thickness (S), loin muscle (m. longissimus dorsi) thickness (M) and warm carcass weight (TM). Equations MF2 and MF3 obtained by own research proved to be more adequate by all criterions than equation PF which is taken from German legislation and than equations MF1 and MF4, also obtained by own research. However, all equations happen to be less precise at extreme values of lean muscle percentages which indicates that there is a need of further research work on improvement of the existing equations and even methods for estimation of meat yield in swine carcasses in Croatia.
