Sažetak
The opposition to Americanisms has been an important feature of British elitist, if not xenophobic purism. Although from the middle of the nineteenth century the British began to borrow more and more from the Americans, Americanisms were considered primitive and unnecessary words. Some opinion polls recently conducted reflect similar negative attitudes. The aim of this paper is to investigate attitudes of native British English speakers to Americanisms in their language. A survey was conducted with 315 native British English speakers in London. The study showed that the hostile attitude to Americanisms, primarily to American spellings, slang words, and the expressions which supplant ‘good’ British words had persisted among many up to the present day.
