Almost all of the vessels can be dated to the period from about 260 to about 400. Some sherds from Table 6, which might be dated to a later period as well, are an exception. The fact that among a few hundred sherds of Late Roman coarse pottery found in the principia there are only four sherds with a wavy line, proves that it does not appear before the year 400. Besides, the pots and plates of “the principia type” do not appear in the Late Roman refugiums of the 5th and 6th century in the area of Slovenia and Croatia. With the decline of the military headquarters complex and the “border”, the Roman population of Liburnia frequently deserted their former homes. In the area of Rijeka there are several refugiums which were used in perilous times between the 5th and 7th century. Among the most famous ones is Oporovina cave. Among its finds, sherds of pots with a wavy line are most numerous. Despite the fact that the principia, as it seems, were more or less deserted, there are traces of life in Tarsatica from the 5th to 7th century. Apart from isolated pottery and other finds discovered in several places in Rijeka, architectural remains of an Early Christian church with a valuable mosaic floor, that was located on the square next to the Kosi toranj (Leaning Tower), testify to it. Pots and plates of “the principia type” can be dated to the end of the 3rd and the beginning and middle of the 4th century. They were produced in large quantities, obviously for the needs of the army that was situated there. Other sherds belong to the pots from the end of the 4th or even 5th and 6th century. These rare later finds prove that the headquarters complex was more or less deserted, but that people dwelled among the ruins periodically. The centre of town life moved eastwards, near the Early Christian church.
