STR Polymorphisms in the population of the Island of Brač, Croatia
The aim of this study was to analyze STR variation using the data on nine loci (D3S1358, vWA, FGA, THO1, TPOX, CSF1PO, D5S818, D13S317, D7S820) in the subpopulations from four rural regions on the island of Brač, Croatia. The analysis of STR allele frequencies, as well as the coefficients of genetic differentiation indicated genetic homogeneity among studied rural regions on the island. Whereas, on one hand the STR data pointed to genetic homogeneity of the population of the island of Brač, the STR allele frequency analysis of four different Adriatic islands showed a statistically significant difference among them. Even though these findings indicate that STR markers should not be chosen for the (micro)evolutionary studies of differentiation of small, closely related and reproductively isolated rural subpopulations of Eastern Adriatic isolates, their application might be more useful for resolving genetic relationships which may arise as a consequence of regional differences.
