STR Polymorphisms in the population of the Island of Hvar
The aim of this study was to analyse STR variation using the data on nine loci (D3S1358, vWA, FGA, THO1, TPOX, CSF1PO, D5S818, D13S317, D7S820) in the subpopulations from six villages on the island of Hvar, Croatia, in order to analyse its genetic structure. The analysis of STR data in this study indicated genetic homogeneity among studied village subpopulations on the island and the lack of the so called "east-west dichotomy" which was indicated by some of the previous multidisciplinary anthropological studies. The value of GST (0.030) suggested a high level of within group (village) diversity relative to total diversity in the population which is in accordance with high rate of population endogamy and the migration/mobility trends on the island. The comparison of the frequency of THO1 alleles between Hvar and those of 10 different European (including two Croatian areas) and world populations revealed some interesting particularities. The validity of STR markers in assessing genetic structure of small populations and especially in determining the relationships among closely related and reproductively isolated groups remains to be further evaluated.
