Analysis of Malocclusions through the Island of Hvar Model
The malocclusion prevalency is taken under consideration concerning the influence that different grades of inbreeding have upon certain occlusal variables. This research showed that reproductively isolated groups can be used as an experimental model within the study of genetic epidemiology of the orofacial system. Since occlusal variations are under the continuous influence of the genetic and ecological factors, the isolated populations represent an ideal model for tracing down the subtle details of their interaction. The sample of this study encompassed 224 dental casts of children, of all the schools on the island of Hvar, which amounted to 20.20% of the total public school population. The identification of the following was done: Angle Classes, overjet, overbite, midline shift, crowding, spacing as well as the type of frontal bite. In the subjects with a greater endogamy of the second generation ancestors there was a statistically significant difference of the Class II, as well as a present influence of endogamy upon the development of grave patterns of anomalies of the Class II and III. It was concluded that regardless of the undebatable influence of the environment upon modeling of occlusal parameters, the genetic basis of the changes appear to be of paramount importance as well. It is possible to assume that a great number of mutated alleles that appear in a recessive form, after conquering the mechanisms of intermaxillar relationships, have a possibility of enhanced expression.
