Response of maize to boron fertilization

Two field experiments with rates of boron (B) fertilization (broadcast application and incorporation in soil immediately prior to sowing of maize: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 kg B/ha in form of borax) were conducted under different environmental conditions (locality A: Bizovac near Osijek ; locality B: Rugvica near Zagreb ; air-distance between two localities about 180 km in WE direction) for two growing seasons (1995 and 1996, respectively). In total, 160 kg N + 140 kg P2O5 + 210 kg K2O/ha were applied. Also, unfertilized plot (absence of NPK fertilization in the year of testing only) was included as a control. The maize inbred lines (mother parents of hybrids in seed-corn production: Os84-28 and Bc176070139 = Os and Bc genotype, respectively) were tested. The soils A and B were different chemical characteristics as follows (0-30 cm depth): pH in 1n KCl = 6.50 and 7.28 ; pH in H2O = 7.30 and 8.00 ; humus contents = 2.49% and 2.96% ; available phosphorus and potassium (AL-method) = 160 and 15.4 mg P2O5/100 g, 17.3 and 12.4 mg K2O/100 g, boron extracted by hot water = 1.20 ppm B for the soil A and unknown value for the soil B, respectively. Average grain yield was higher in the first year of testing (4.34 in comparison with 3.29 t/ha). Less favorable properties of the soil in comparison with the soil A could be in connection with lower maize yield ( 2.88 t/ha in comparison with 4.77 t/ha). Under identical environmental conditions, the higher yield was found in the Bc parent (4.00 t/ha in comparison with 3.61 t/ha). Fertilization with N, P and K resulted by increase grain yield for 48% in comparison with unfertilized plot (2.81 t/ha in comparison with 4.17 t/ha) . In general, by application of the higher B rates grain yields decreased in comparison with 2 kg B/ha application, especially in the first year of testing.
