Croatian tourism, transition and global development processes
Globalisation as a world phenomenon changes the established temporal and spatial perception of "everyday life". Tourism is not only an antecedent to, but also one of the primary initiators of this process. Croatian tourism, on the one hand, is faced with the problem of transition, and on the other, with the demand to become a part of world global trends. This brings us to the dilemma of how to, and whether to, participate in globalisation processes. Turning a blind eye to these processes will merely serve to augment the costs of doing business in an unadapted environment. Therefore, stressing the negative aspects of globalisation instead of utilising the positive ones does not lead to any rational long-term solutions. Croatia must execute the necessary preparations for participating in globalisation. At the same time, the transition process needs to be concluded. These preparations cannot be implemented only on the level of the tourism sector, but on the level of Croatia as a whole. If Croatia choose to become an active participant in globalisation processes with the aim of valorising its advantages in the field of tourism, it is advisable to develop a strategy and operative policy of adapting the tourist sector on three levels: in changes brought about transition, in normative adjustment and standardisation, and in positioning Croatian tourism with regard to global trends.
