Sažetak
The profound effects of neural growth factors on the central nervous system have become more apparent in the past decade. They are involved in brain growth and development, and also act as neuroprotective factors. The lack of neural growth factors and hypoxia are two recent hypotheses about the mechanisms underlying motor neuron death in motor neuron disease. Retinitis pigmentosa is a group of inherited eye disorders characterized by night blindness and tunnel vision, which often leads to complete blidness over decades. There is evidence of importance of neural growth factors for the eye and that basic fibroblast-derived growth factor could promote retinal rescue in the rat model of retinal degeneration. In this case report, we present a patient suffering from both diseases and consider it to be of interest for the possible defect of neural growth factor synthesis as a schered pathogenetic mechanism that may cause alteration of the intracellular signaling pathways as a key event in the regulation of apoptotic cell mechanismin retinal cells and motor neurons.
