Chemical Weed Control in Bulb and Direct-seeded Onion
Method and goal of farming have a greatly influence on weed control in onion. The method (direct-seeded, bulb, seedlings) has an impact on seed-germination period, growth rate and lenght of the growing season. All of above influence on competitive ability of onion and on weed management. The goal of farming (for seeds, reproduction bulbs and konsumption bulbs) influences on weed control too. Field experiment was conducted at Kloštar Ivanić (near Zagreb) in 2011 to determine affect of weeds to yield depending on methods and goals onion farming and efficacy of multiple application reduced-rates of herbicides. Investigated herbicides were pendimethalin, bromoxynil, oxyfluorfen, fluroxypyr, clopyralid, cycloxidim and diquat. They were applied in tank mix combination at multiple (triple and more lower than registered) reduced rates sequential for five times. Observed parameters were fresh over-ground mass of weeds and onion yield. Results suggest that weeds affected the direct-seeded onion yield much more than the bulb farming onion (0, 28 kg m-2 and 3, 75 kg m-2 respectively). Drect-seeded onion has longer growing season than onion from bulb, wherefore it needs more applications of herbicides. We found that repeated application of reduced-rates herbicides provides very good weed control without onion injury.
