Quantum size effects and the electronic structure of metallic adsorbates
Reduced dimensionality in ultra-thin metallic films leads to new properties that may have significant influence in the forthcomming era of nanotechnology. In this talk we concentrate on the quantum size effcts brought about by depositing metallic layers, atomic layer by atomic layer, on a metallic, well defined, surface. As a prototype we present a system of silver layers on a V(100) surface. The electronic and structural properties have been studied by the use of angular resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, inverse photoemission, Auger electron spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction and scanning tunnelling spectroscopy as a function of film thickness, concentration of imperfections and defect and temperature.
