Equine rhinopneumonitis in Croatia 2009 - introduced or unrecognized disease

As equine rhinopneumonites is worldwide distributed disease object of this study was to determinate is 2009 outbreak consequence of introduction of EHV-1 for the first time in Croatia or rhinopneumonitis is endemic but unrecognized disease. To determinate former prevalence of equine rhinopneumonitis in different horse populations in Croatia we used 200 archive horse sera randomly selected from horse sera collected during 2005. We tested 100 sera from sport and leisure horse population and another 100 from free-range horse populations with CF-test to investigate seroprevalence in different horse populations. Results of this study undoubtedly confirmed that equine rhinopneumonitis is present in horse in Croatia at least 4 years. Also as all tested animals weren’t vaccinated results showed that disease was present with high seroprevalence in both epidemiologically distinct populations. In conclusion equine rhinopneumonitis is endemic disease in Croatia in all horse populations and it wasn’t introduced for the first time in April 2009.Confirmed outbreak with neurological clinical signs and abortion in large numbers of mares 2009 probably is consequence of introduction of new viral strain in horse population in Croatia.
